The Secret To Red Lipstick

Lipstick. We've talked about how much I love lipstick...and even if we hadn't, half of this blog's title would give you the idea. Every woman needs to know how to apply lipstick well, even if she doesn't make a habit of wearing it frequently. The day will come when you'll be in need of wearing lipstick and I want to make sure you don't have a hideous time because you didn't know how to properly apply it. Specifically, we'll be talking about the secret to applying red lipstick, which is the most finicky and most rewarding of lipstick colors, I feel. For starters: materials.

  • a moisturizer (I like Burt's Bees, coconut oil, or this Nivea lip-moisturizer in "Cherry")
  • foundation/cover-up
  • red lip-lining pencil
  • red lipstick (I'm using Revlon's Super Lustrous Lip Creme in "Love That Red")
  • illuminator (optional)
The steps to applying red lipstick are nearly the same as with any other lipstick...just more carefully performed.

1.) Start by moisturizing your lips a couple minutes before you plan to apply lipstick. Wipe off excess moisturizer before beginning.
2.) Apply a thin layer of foundation to and around your lips. This will help make sure that your lipstick doesn't bleed. No one wants to look like the Joker when they wear red lipstick.
3.) Line your lips with pencil. Follow the natural shape of your lips, making sure to announce the points of your cupid's bow and the corners of your mouth.
4.) Fill in lips with pencil
5.) Apply a layer of your red lipstick. Kiss off on a tissue. Apply another layer (or two). Kiss off again, and pull your finger through your lips once to ward off lipstick-on-the-teeth.
6.) If desired, add a little illuminator to the bow of your lips and just under your bottom lip to accent the red.

And there you have it: lips even the most elegant of silver-screen ladies would be proud to sport! I'm a proud believer in the fact that life is too short not to wear red lipstick. But our confidence in wearing it grows in proportion to how secure it feels on our lips; this system should assure that your lipstick stays in place longer than you've dreamed. And remember: never forget to bring your lipstick along for a quick reapplication! Fresh color is fresh power (P.S. I really want a lipstick taser).

Bon chance, ladies!

    1. I will expound on this in a different post, but essentially you look at your skin-tone and figure out if you have warmer or cooler undertones. Then you choose a lipstick to coordinate.
